The Warrick County School Corporation held its inaugural Student Think Tank Meeting on November 1st at the Central Offices Building. The group was formed and facilitated by Superintendent Dr. Todd Lambert in an effort to engage student voices. Three students from every high school in the county were admitted into the group. Boonville High School’s delegates are Seniors Hudson Nelson and Jaiden Wilson-Fulks, and Junior Owen Phillips. These students are overwhelmingly pleased by their first meeting, and those to come.
The Student Think Tank is a fresh idea proposed by Lambert so that he, along with our teachers and administrators, can better understand what it’s like to be a student in Warrick County.
The meeting consisted of icebreakers and introductions before diving into the issues that matter to students. The questions considered by delegates revolved around what our schools do well and where there is an opportunity for improvement. The areas of consideration varied widely, but all students agreed that there is a call for change.
Senior Hudson Nelson said, ”I think this group will be a great success in improving the experience for incoming students, not only of BHS, but for all of Warrick County.” In theory, this group should allow students to create a better experience for the students that will follow them. It was clear at the meeting that the delegates weren’t there to improve our schools for themselves, but for those that will soon be in their place.
The forming of this group is a groundbreaking step in empowering student dialogue. The BHS delegates have the responsibility of representing their classmates and their ideas, therefore they would be pleased to hear from you about your experience. Change isn’t spurred by those that wait for someone else to enact it, and one thing is for sure, the Student Think Tank isn’t waiting for anyone.
