The highly anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 campaign released on October 28th, to surprising reviews. IGN gave it an 8/10 with PC Gamer giving it 4 stars out of 5. While the campaign isn’t bad it’s not anything special either.

The story is competent and fun, but lacks an intriguing villain, something that is integral to a good Modern Warfare story. The visuals are stunning–easily the most impressive part of the game.

The gameplay feels just as smooth as the previous entries. The game feels effortless to play.

The mission variety is unrivaled. No two set pieces are similar, even slightly. You go from a freighter in the middle of the ocean, to a vast desert with nothing for miles, to the middle of Chicago. The missions are also surprisingly varied. You have your stealth and big battle missions, and of course the obligatory gunship mission, but also some missions that have never been seen before. In one mission you have to shoot enemies upside down while hanging out of a helicopter, and in another you have to craft and loot items to escape a town.

If you have ever played the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, you would know Shepard is to not be trusted, but even with this information his betrayal still feels powerful, I was actually taken by surprise for a few seconds.

Where the campaign falters the most is at the ending. Simply put, it’s one of the worst in franchise history. The ending is abrupt, transitioning straight to the end credits from the last mission. There is no big cinematic scene, leaving the player feeling unsatisfied. The game doesn’t feel finished, which it isn’t. Infinity Ward has already announced that they are adding more content to the campaign in a far distant update, something the post credits scene alluded to. While this is good news, it is unfortunate that it has made the ending so underwhelming.
