OPINION: Respect Our Cafeteria Staff

It can be easy to overlook the fact that there is food prepared and ready to eat when the lunch bell rings. This isn’t something that kids everywhere get the blessing to experience, so why aren’t the lunch staff getting more recognition for all that they do?

There are women who wake up in the morning and come to our school to make us food. They make food based on state mandated menu and dietary restrictions, yet they receive complaint after complaint. “This doesn’t taste good.” “This looks weird.” “Why do we have to eat this?” “This is nasty.” They aren’t at fault for the food; they are the reason we even have food.

I think it is about time that we show the lunch staff how much they really mean to us. When you get your tray, just tell them how much you appreciate it. Even a simple “thank you” is sufficient. Thank whomever checks you out at the computer. Thank those who take your trays and wash them so you have something to eat off of the next day. Just be thankful that you have people who consistently work to make sure we have food and a clean place to eat it.

It is okay to not like the food being served; that is why there are options. You can pick and choose what to get on your tray. If you don’t like any of the options, then bring your lunch. If you bring your lunch, you can bring and eat literally anything you want. If you don’t want to pursue any of these options, then that is your own choice. Do as you wish but don’t place your own personal dislike on the shoulders of others.

It can be all too easy to forget how blessed we are to have food prepared when we walk into the cafeteria. Next time you get your food, don’t turn your nose up and be unthankful. Thank those who impact your life. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you.
